THE LEDGE, written by Jack Hanley and directed and designed by Christopher Eaves, begins previews at The Sanford Meisner Theater (164 11th Avenue) Monday, November 27th and runs through Sunday, December 16th. THE LEDGE is based upon the O. Henry Prize-winning short story written by Lawrence Sargent Hall. A fisherman is stranded with his son and nephew on a small reef exposed at low tide off the New England coast in winter. The following morning the fisherman‘s drowned body is dragged on to a wharf for his wife to see. From his frozen, post-corporeal being he is compelled by her eyes to relive his last hours holding the boys above the icy waters, to relive his last seconds of breath as the tide rises around his neck, to witness again his son swimming into darkness.
THE LEDGE utilizes video projection as the sole source of stage lighting. The video not only illuminates the actor but also casts the stage décor and forms metaphorical undertones of the dramatic narrative. THE LEDGE stars Mike Houston with Sound and Video by Christopher Eaves. Jack Hanley’s previous play, Self at Hand, first presented at Dixon Place in 2005, is published in the annual play anthology Plays And Playwrights 2006 (New York Theatre Experience.) In addition to directing THE LEDGE, Christopher Eaves will also direct the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Tom Fontana’s The Fourth Wise Man at Studio Arena Theatre (Buffalo, NY) this fall. THE LEDGE begins previews on November 27th. THE LEDGE opens on Friday, December 1st and runs through Sunday, December 16th at The Sanford Meisner Theater, 164 11th Avenue (South of W. 22nd St.). Admission is $20/$15.
